My Friendship with My Roommates

Tuesday, January 4, 2011

This is my first "real" gratitude post. I decided that the best way to begin this daily thankfulness journey, I should start with something that I'm really, really, REALLY grateful for. And the great thing was, I didn't have to think too hard about it. At all.

Why, you ask? As I posted recently in a facebook note listing the greatest lessons I've learned during my first couple semesters: "Your roommates are a built-in support system who are there to love, listen, and give advice". The girls that I room with now, and the girls that I roomed with in the summer, have become my best friends. No, scratch that. They've become my sisters. I love and appreciate everything they are and what they contribute to my life so much, and I want the best for each and every one of them.

I'm amazed that I've been blessed with such great roommates. I have talked to people from other rooms who are less than happy with the roommates they have for one reason or another. My story? I couldn't be happier with my summer and current roommates. They're fun and upbeat, they're patient with me (miracle right there), they listen and offer sincere advice, and they bring a good spirit wherever they go. And the great thing is, I live (or used to live) with them! I'm around these girls practically 24/7. With these girls around me all the time, how can I help but become a better person?

Over Christmas break, I bought this necklace for each of my roommates. I made each one a little card in which I stuck the necklace, and gave them out last night after we had all returned to our apartment. After my last class today, I came home to find all five of my roommates lounging in the kitchen. I looked around the room and noticed that each one of them was wearing the necklace that I had gotten them. It made me happier than I had been during my entire Christmas Break.

Roommates, old and new, if you're reading this, I want you to know… I'm glad that you are in my life, and I LOVE YOU!
